Dual-Timeline Story Examines Friendship, Guilt and a 1979 Incident in London's Soho District

Set mainly in 1999 with extensive flashbacks to the 1960s and 1970s, the story recounts the lives of characters including Mario, Helen, Rose, Julian, Father Tony, Celine and twins Luke and Joseph. Their annual supper serves as the framework for revisiting events surrounding a violent confrontation at Victor's Bar on Greek Street in 1979.

The novel portrays the social environment of Soho during that period, including jazz bars, street life and the influence of organised crime associated with figures such as the Kray twins. Through the characters' recollections, the account explores personal histories, relationships formed in childhood and the consequences of choices made in difficult circumstances.

An epilogue set in 2021 shows how the surviving members of the group have continued their lives in subsequent years. The book draws on real historical locations and contexts of post-war and 1970s London while presenting a fictional story of ordinary people connected by shared experiences.

Key Highlights:

  • Structures the narrative around an annual supper that prompts the group to revisit a 1979 incident at a Greek Street bar.
  • Interweaves timelines from the 1960s and 1970s with events from 1999 to the present to present multiple perspectives on the same period.
  • Depicts Soho's atmosphere during the era of jazz venues and the lingering effects of 1960s criminal networks.
  • Follows a diverse group of characters whose childhood bonds in the district shape their adult relationships and decisions.
  • Incorporates authentic London locations and historical references into the fictional framework.
  • Marks the first novel by John Paris, who previously worked as a professional artist.
  • Concludes with an epilogue updating the characters' circumstances in 2021.
